Having one eyelid more closed than the other is an eye anomaly that can be due to various reasons:

Genetic cause: Having a family history of this disease or having been born directly with it can affect the child’s visual development. It can also be a symptom of some muscle diseases.

Muscle malfunction: The muscles responsible for raising the structure of the eyelid (levator palpebrae muscle) can deteriorate over time. In this sense, the body’s aging can be the direct cause of one eyelid appearing more closed than another.

A cyst or tumor in that area: Although they are not the most common causes, a cyst or tumor may appear in the eyelid or the rest of the surrounding structures. This could cause the appearance of a droopy eyelid, which is known as mechanical ptosis.

How Is It Diagnosed?

The only way to diagnose ptosis or a droopy eyelid is by going to the ophthalmologist. The ophthalmologist will be in charge of checking the condition of the eyelids and the rest of the eye. Once diagnosed, the most recommended ptosis treatment is prescribed in clinics like lovely eye clinic for instance depending on the origin of the problem.

What Solutions Exist For Droopy Eyelids?

Several solutions help us counteract the appearance of droopy eyelids:

Strengthen muscles with the right exercises

When the cause of having one or both droopy eyelids is natural aging, this situation can be improved, or at least prevented from going any further, by performing the appropriate exercises.

A possible exercise routine focused on strengthening the muscles around the eyes would be this:

Open and close your eyes. If you want to be more effective, you have to close them hard and open them slowly for 5 seconds.

Press the eyebrows. This exercise consists of placing the index fingers on the eyebrows and pressing them down. In the meantime, try to raise your eyebrows as hard as possible.

Move your eyes in a clockwise direction. This exercise is done sitting down, keeping your back and neck straight while making circles with your eyes. You have to follow the direction of the clock’s needles and then the opposite.

Pull the skin back. It involves placing several fingers of the hands on the two temples and stretching the skin backward. Meanwhile, they open and close their eyes repeatedly and rapidly.
